Gregg Berhalter has been released from his contract with German second division side 1860 Munich and has signed a two-year contract with Major League Soccer, the team announced Wednesday (links to German press release). A spokesman for 1860 said a decision would be announced in the coming days. He declined further comment.

The 35-year old defender’s precise destination is not yet known but press reports on both sides of the Atlantic were reporting the LA Galaxy as the winners in the Berhalter sweepstakes. Most reports come back to a Steve Goff story for the Washington Post’s Soccer Insider column.

The 44-time U.S. international has spent the last 15 years in Europe, the last two and a half with 1860. Previous stops include Energie Cottbus (2002-2006), Crystal Palace (2000-2002), Dutch Eredivisie sides Cambuur Leeuwarden (1998-2000) and Sparta Rotterdam (1996-1998) and Dutch second division side FC Zwolle (1994-1996). He figured prominently in the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan, where the U.S. famously advanced to the quarterfinals, and was also called into the 2006 squad but did not see any action. The coach for those teams? Bruce Arena, current head coach of the LA Galaxy.

In case you’re wondering, this is not an April Fool’s joke. One German outlet said 1860 Munich had assured it this was not the case.
