Niko Gkionis to MLS?

By ASN Staff • Dec 7th, 2009 • Category: Rumblings

RFC Liege midfielder Niko Gkionis is attracting interest from clubs in Major League Soccer and could make the switch back to his homeland when his contract expires next summer, ASN has learned. The 24-year old New Jersey native joined the EXQI League (Belgian second division) side on a free transfer from RSC Montegnee this summer. He recently scored his first professional goal for Liege in his first start for the club, an experience he blogged about on Jared Montz’s site. The club could use all the help it can get: they currently sit 19th and last in the EXQI league with just 10 points from 17 games.

Gkionis played one season with the then-Metrostars youth academy and was a Division III All-American at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J. After graduating in 2007 he first went to Cyprus (he appears to hold a Cypriot passport) to play for MEAP Nisou, before Montegnee signed him in 2008.
